Workplace violence creates a major problem which impacts all employees in the workplace. Employees commonly believe that HR and management will handle problems but this approach becomes dangerous when threats emerge that endanger personal safety. Staff members need to report immediate danger to their lives because it represents an urgent situation. The protection of employees requires immediate action from HR or management when their lives become endangered. Hence, protecting employees becomes critical when they work in toxic and hostile environments which make them feel unsafe and unnecessarily exposed to danger. The process of taking action becomes challenging when employees choose to wait for others to handle the situation because it creates dangerous circumstances. All employees have the right to protect themselves from threats without needing to face job loss or coworker retaliation.

The majority of workers are forced, and many times choose to stay silent about violent threats because they fear for their safety. Workers may avoid reporting threats because they fear job termination and negative reactions from their colleagues. The workplace environment creates an intense sense of fear among women and young ladies who experience higher levels of vulnerability. Workplace violence disproportionately affects women, as evidenced by various statistics highlighting this troubling trend. Workplace bullying, sexual harassment, power harassment and workplace mobbing all effect women and young ladies more, therefore they are many times, forced out of the workplace because of these abuses. Not to mention, the spinning of a false narrative about their character and professional standings, so the abuser can escape accountability for their crimes against them by creating smear campaigns so no one will believe what happened to them. These figures reveal the extent of the issue, underscoring the need for increased awareness and proactive measures to ensure a safer working environment for all employees. Addressing this problem is crucial not only for the well-being of women in the workforce but also for fostering a culture of respect and safety in professional settings.

Social conditioning encourages the practice of staying silent about workplace violence, and it creates an environment where threats and violent behavior continue to exist without proper intervention. Organizations need to develop reporting systems which protect employee confidentiality during threat reporting procedures and need to demonstrate their commitment to handling these matters with seriousness. The implementation of training programs which teach staff members to identify and report threats will help them become more effective. Staff members who understand proper reporting procedures will feel more comfortable to take action instead of enduring dangerous situations. A workplace environment that supports employee empowerment to report concerns will establish a safe space for all employees.

The successful prevention of workplace violence requires organizations to establish strong connections between their staff members and their management team. The success of workplace safety depends on employees who maintain open lines of communication with their colleagues. Management teams need to establish direct contact with their staff members to establish safety and wellness dialogue. The establishment of scheduled meetings and discussion platforms enables staff members to share their safety concerns without facing any work-related consequences. Management teams that listen to employee feedback and take action create an environment where staff members feel important and secure. The company should establish safety as its core value to create an environment where all employees can work safely.

Safety Tips:

Document all threats and interactions with individual(s) threatening to unalive you or lethal threats to your personal safety. If you feel safe, and use distance, to take pictures, videos and witness statements, with names, times and place. Make sure you have a dashcam or place to put your phone camera on your dashboard or rear-view mirror phone holder and use the video till you get to the LE station. It’s important to stay calm, but aware.

If you feel your life is in immediate danger at work, do not wait for HR to intervene. LEAVE…Prioritize your safety by clocking out, (call 911and keep them on the phone.) go directly to the nearest police station or sheriff’s office to file charges. It’s crucial to act quickly and ensure you are safe. After seeking help, contact HR to inform them of your situation and your departure. Additionally, document everything that happened, stay in touch with law enforcement, and seek support from trusted friends or family during this challenging time.
